What To See In The Pilbara Region
Karijini, highly regarded for its spectacular trekking paths, unique fauna and red dirt, is situated 150 kilometres to the west of the town of Newman
One can find trekking paths to suit all degrees of experience, from grade 6 (available to licensed hikers or employing a guide) right down to grade 3. One can find by far the most spectacular gorges with stunning designs. One trail boasts a 40 metre abseil down a waterfall. Should you be privileged, you’ll get to observe a few wedgetailed eagles, which often can have a wingspan of 300 centimetres!
Use caution when out walking, though. The spot is often a high flash flood threat. Due to the sharp and compact gorges, water just has one direction to go: upward. Many hikers have perished as a result of the flash floods, such as a SES rescue volunteer a few years ago. This really is an extremely wild area and should not be taken lightly. Always notify someone where you will be going and stay away from hiking all by yourself.
If you decide to stay in Karijini, there’s an eco-retreat that includes solar hot water and platforms with sizable camp tents build on them. If living in tents is not your thing, it is far better for you to stay in the Auzcorp Mia Mia resort in the town of Newman.
Not far north of Karijini will be the mining centre of Port Hedland. It’s the largest town in the zone and somewhere around 15,000 people are located there. Month after month, nearly 20 million tonnes of iron ore go through the main harbour, headed for China, Japan and USA. Several other major exports also include sea salt (you’ll want to drive to the salt mine just outside Port Hedland), manganese, sheep and cattle.
When you take some time in Port Hedland, you will probably feel very out of place if you don’t put on a flurescent shirt. Basically everyone in Port Hedland is employed on the mines. Those that don’t either assist the miners with meals and housing, or they’re holidaymakers.
You will discover accommodation a little bit challenging to come by in Port Hedland. Those that are readily available usually are expensive. The best place to stay could be the Auzcorp Beachside Village. It used to be the Port Hedland Detention Centre, though it was redeveloped as a motel several years ago. When security is very important to you, this is the perfect destination. Each of the security measures that had been put in place to keep detainees inside are now utilised for keeping vacationers safer. Don’t fret, the hotel doesn’t resemble a detention centre. It seems more like a secure lodge.
Some other tourist attractions in the neighborhood would be the Whaleback Mountain mine run by BHP Billiton. It is the biggest open cut mine on earth. Marble Bar is also brimming with mining heritage. If National Parks are more your cup of tea, be sure you drop by Cape Kerandren National Park and Rudal River National Park. Case: auz48376
